Community Bell (Concept)
Throughout the years in which I have been creating kinetic sculpture, I have wanted to create a public work that is low-tech, but has a ritualistic and interactive component that requires group effort and interaction. This is a working concept model for a bell which requires a significant weight in order to ring - it will require a group of people at the same time to step onto the base and depress it in rhythm. This project serves as a step in the process, an invitation to consider sculpture with a simple concept that brings people together through an interactive and unifying experience. It transforms public space into a collaborative space, providing access to art for those who may not feel comfortable in traditional gallery settings. The sculpture could inspire communities to organize their own rituals or community experiences around it. Thank you to the Maryland State Arts Council for providing the funding support to develop this idea.
