Carroll Creek Kinetic Promenade, Frederick, MD

An exploration of bird murmurations that is reflective and emotional, honoring the weight of loneliness and power of community. This kinetic sculpture has three levels of response to the wind: the aluminum tiles move in the slightest breeze, the first axis spins in a light breeze, and the main axis rotates when there is a stronger wind. Calibrated counterweights allow the main sculpture to move slowly and fluidly in contrast with the shimmering and reactive cloud of tiles. A central pair of stainless-steel gears engages the movement of the entire piece and prevents it from finding equilibrium. Built of hollow-form steel.
